New Facts Emerge
The Fall
Release Date: 28th July 2017
Cherry Red

Like clockwork, here is this years new The Fall release. Always the same, always different, even when new facts do emerge. But one good thing about this mantra, is disappointment shall be rare, and Mark E Smith snarling shall be there. Old facts for you here.  Continue reading

Transformer – Manchester Victoria Warehouse

May feels like quite some time ago now, but the memories of Transformer still burn fairly brightly in my mind. Like a candle half way through bright. A full day of music from musicians heavily influenced by Lou Reed, hence the name Transformer, and not a full day of music from musicians heavily influenced by robots in disguise. Though wouldn’t that be something? Continue reading

Shabazz Palaces – Quazarz vs the Jealous Machines

Quazarz vs the Jealous Machines
Shabazz Palaces
Release Date: 14th July 2017
Sub Pop

…we end up fighting the Jealous Machines now we’ve made it to Quazarz. Or maybe this is before we end up drifting through the atmosphere on ‘Born on a Gangster Star’? Does it even matter which came first? Chicken or the egg, we still have two Shabazz Palaces albums in 2017, so let’s just keep drifting through space. It’s the place.

Melvins aren’t the only group to put out a conceptual double album this year, with Shabazz Palaces exploring the world of Quazarz across two discs, though you have to pay up twice if you want the full intergalactic experience. Here is the first part, or is it the second? Maybe it doesn’t matter, but with this being the first of the two announced back when, we’ll go from here, to Quazarz!  Continue reading

Kendrick Lamar – DAMN.

Kendrick Lamar
Release Date: 14th April 2017

After To Pimp A Butterfly, the only way up is to take a turn and go back on yourself. Damn. is a trip back to basics, away from the avant-garde jazz rap, and towards a series of hard-hitting beats and lines, so everything’s fine. Back to his other kind of genius is a better way to put it… to use basics, well, that’s just… damn! Continue reading

A Walk With Love & Death

‘Buying this Melvins record will make you smarter, happier, & more attractive’ is what the sticker on the latest album, A Walk With Love & Death, says to bring you on board. And I must say, yes, I do feel smarter, happier & more attractive. Thanks Melvins! Continue reading

Actress – AZD

Release Date: 13th April 2017
Ninja Tune

Actress gave me a moment a few years back. It was whilst walking in the rain, listening to the track ‘Jardin’ from ‘R.I.P’. The music matched the mood, as if it was raining down from the sky rather than from my earphones, and for a moment, just a moment, what was nothing felt like something. Shoppers carried on rushing under the grey of it all, but I simply stood there, listening and watching raindrops fall in slow motion. Listening to the track afterwards never helped bring some recreation into things, it simply annoyed as it sounded like someone was scratching something through the music. It’s an Actress thing, and AZD provides similar moments. Continue reading
